Koji Nakamura

Koji Nakamura, born in 1960 in Hyogo, Japan, is a taiko artist whose passion and dedication have resonated with audiences worldwide.

Nakamura's transformative experience began with intensive training as a member of the world-renowned taiko group Ondekoza, laying the foundation for his career, participating in a resplendent European tour that took him through France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and England. The journey continued with appearances at prestigious events like the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Edinburgh Festival in England.

Building on the invaluable knowledge he received during his journey, he went on to establish the internationally acclaimed Shumei Taiko Ensemble. From 1985 to 2001, Nakamura led the ensemble, leaving an indelible mark on the taiko landscape.

With a strong focus on spirit, the ensemble's artistry transcended borders, captivating audiences in Hong Kong in 1989 and embarking on their inaugural U.S. tour in 1996, including a performance at the Interfaith Service in New York.

Nakamura's artistic prowess extended beyond stages and into the realm of profound cultural exchange and harmony. In 1999, he graced the Parliament of World Religions and participated in the World Festival of Sacred Music, championed by His Holiness Dalai Lama XIV, in South Africa. A testament to his universal appeal, Nakamura performed at the opening ceremony of the Millennium World Peace Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2000, leaving an enduring impact.

Driven by a desire to nurture young talent and contribute to the betterment of communities, his mission now centers on teaching drumming to aspiring young musicians, empowering them to embrace the transformative power of taiko. He has trained four groups spanning the United States, one of them being OMNY Taiko!

Recognition for Nakamura's exceptional contributions came in 2007 when he received a Grammy Award for his outstanding work on Paul Winter's album, "Crestone." This prestigious accolade serves as a testament to his artistry and the profound impact he has made on the world stage.
